ARCHIE DAVIS
The historic naming of Research Triangle Park was based on its centralized location between three major universities in Durham, Chapel Hill, and Raleigh, also known today as The Triangle. The warm woodland feeling in this photograph was inspired by the forested areas of North Carolina and RTPs' creation within a pine forest.
Lying beneath the surface is a more abstract story as the image is comprised of triangle shaped objects. From larger shapes that create the overall composition, to smaller items such as fox ears and pinecones and foodstuffs, you will find triangles in every corner of the scene.
This photograph also highlights Archie Davis who was an integral part in the creation of Research Triangle Park. Mr. Davis had a passion for civil war history, as well as a connection to Moravian history as Chairman of the Board of Wachovia Bank. The origins of Moravia are highlighted with Czech Republic currency alongside other items used for early commerce such as pearls and shells. Archie Davis also served two terms in the NC Senate and was president of the US Chamber of Commerce.
Project Overview
I want the viewer to see a traditional still life scene at first glance. Then, upon closer inspection they’ll see fine details and hidden objects that make up the true complexity of the photograph. The title of each piece hints at the deeper meaning within the scene, while the accompanying story brings into view the true symbolism of each image.
I hope the striking colors and composition will force you to stop and stare. More importantly, I hope that it draws you back many times as each viewing reveals something new.
The bronze bust of Luther Hodges, and the oil paintings of Archie Davis and Robert Hanes are pillars of this collection of photographs. Individually these men accomplished great things, but together they wrote the history of the Triangle Region and State of North Carolina. This collection of still life artwork celebrates North Carolina, Research Triangle Park, and its founders’ legacies and common love for the state of NC.
